The barn “Al Scheier”, dating back to 1878 and listed as a historic monument, underwent a restoration project carried out in close consultation with the local community. An information session and a round-table discussion with the architects enabled the exchange of ideas and the integration of residents’ needs from the very beginning of the project.
The historical character of the building was preserved through the restoration of original elements and the discreet integration of contemporary additions, particularly for technical installations. A harmonious dialogue between old and new was achieved, with a focus on durable materials.
Certain emblematic features were highlighted, such as the former hayloft floor, now transformed into a suspended ceiling, or the sandstone window surrounds, which were restored and complemented with modern metal frames.
The spaces were designed to be flexible and inclusive, suitable for community events, training sessions, or hosting local associations. The exterior layout includes a new forecourt, adorned with plaques retracing key stages in the life of Grand Duke Jean, a native of Betzdorf.
