The Metzeschmelz district involves the rehabilitation of a 63-hectare former steelworks site located between Esch-sur-Alzette and Schifflange, transforming it into a mixed-use urban neighborhood with housing, retail, offices, artisanal spaces, and cultural, social, and public facilities. Eventually, the project will host approximately 10,000 new residents, with a total gross built-up area of around 800,000 m².
The project preserves the industrial character of the site with areas dedicated to artisanal activities, workshops, and storage spaces, while primarily emphasizing residential use: 50 % of the program is dedicated to housing, with 30 % allocated as affordable housing.
Planning follows the “Stadtfabrik” urban concept, encouraging minimal car usage. Some of the old industrial buildings will be retained and will accommodate, for example, the future rapid tram station. The Alzette river will be renatured, and a new station is also planned.
