Each Rotonde has a diameter of 52 meters and was built in 1875, originally serving as a roundhouse and workshop for steam locomotives.
After the gradual disappearance of these engines following World War II, they were repurposed:
Rotonde 1: storage space
Rotonde 2: CFL bus repair workshop
Classified as national monuments in 1991, the Rotondes were subject to various reuse proposals between 1994 and 2000. In 2000, the site came under the responsibility of the Ministry of Culture.
From 2001, Rotonde 1 underwent rehabilitation, while Rotonde 2 continued to host CFL workshops. After decontamination was completed in 2012, Rotonde 1 was converted to accommodate:
a performance hall (Grande Salle)
an exhibition hall (Gallery)
a multifunctional space (Platform)
In 2024, a major renovation project of Rotonde 2 was launched in collaboration with the Public Buildings Administration, the City of Luxembourg, and the Ministry of Culture. The project is guided by the evolving cultural programming and the need to optimize the site (storage, reception, catering).
