The redevelopment project of the Pontpierre interchange (junction of the Esch A4 motorway with the N13 national road) aims at a complete constructive redevelopment of the interchange, including the construction of a roundabout and the creation of ramps for motorway access and exit.
The interchange redevelopment involves the construction of four ramps connecting to a new roundabout to be created on the N13, with a layout that takes into account the possible widening of the motorway to 2 × 3 lanes.
To construct the roundabout under the motorway, it was decided to build 2 frame bridges outside the motorway to ensure traffic flow during the entire construction phase.
The road project consists of the following elements:
• Widening of the A4 motorway to 2 × 3 lanes over a length of 1,400 m
• Construction of the 4-ramp interchange (2 ramps of 700 m towards Luxembourg, 2 ramps of 500 m towards Esch/Alzette)
• Construction of the roundabout on the N13 (80 m wide × 230 m long)
• Creation of a bus and carpool lane in each direction on the motorway
• Surface water drainage via 5,500 m of pipes DN300 to DN1200
• Rehabilitation of the existing retention basin of 11,000 m³ with siphon wall and sediment trap of 352 m³, as well as a planted sand filter with reeds of 1,635 m²
• Diversion or protection of existing infrastructure networks
• Installation of acoustic screens (1,800 m) and sound-absorbing panels (500 m)
• Relocation or reinforcement of lighting devices and specific CITA installations (sign gantries, technical cabinets, masts, and video cameras, etc.)
• Horizontal and vertical signage and safety equipment
The structural works consist of the following elements:
• Demolition of the existing “Rue de l’Europe” structure on the N13
• Construction of retaining walls along the motorway (2 walls of 165 m and 2 walls of 360 m)
• Construction of a retaining wall intended for the future tramway alignment (260 m)
• Construction of 2 structures for motorway passage over the roundabout (15.5 m wide × 38 m long) installed using slipform technique
• Widening of the existing structure
