Design of the north-eastern part of the station district

Road construction & various networks

The redevelopment of Luxembourg’s station district is directly linked to the introduction of the tram and the authorities’ desire to turn this area into a new, vibrant business district where people enjoy walking and meeting up.

The district is heavily influenced by car and bus traffic and regular commercial activity. The aim was to create more space for public transport, soft modes of transport, pedestrians and cyclists, while also preserving the shops that contribute to the city’s active and high-quality life.

One of the main challenges is to enable the district to be accessed by various vehicles (maintenance, delivery, buses, various services, but also residents) while promoting the landscape and urban quality of the location. An additional complication is to take into account the existing “heavy” networks that cannot be relocated, as well as the planned future networks. No fewer than seven streets and three small squares in the neighbourhood will be reclassified in terms of both their landscape design and their status.

The newly designed station district is a new, quiet, dynamic place that interacts with the associated projects, in particular the construction of the tramway.
