Extension of the Maison-Relais and Preschool

A three-story extension was built on the existing two-story building of the Gonderange school, and renovation works were carried out on the existing lower levels. The works were carried out largely without interrupting school activities. A wing in mixed construction, reinforced concrete and wood, was erected on the south gable of the existing building. As the extension includes a basement relative to the existing structure, underpinning works were necessary. During the execution of these underpinning works, the affected area of the school was closed for safety reasons. During the standard construction works, the affected rooms could still be used for school purposes as long as the noise from construction activities allowed.

The choice of prefabricated wooden modules was therefore necessary to minimize disruption in terms of both noise and safety for the occupants and staff of the school buildings.

The construction area was separated from the schoolyard and the adjacent playground by a solid construction fence made of wooden panels. “Windows” were installed for the children so they could observe interesting construction activities during breaks. Access to the site was provided via a local residents’ road away from school activity, ensuring no interaction between construction traffic and school activity. During major renovation works of the kitchen and adjacent technical rooms on the top floor of the existing building, a full temporary relocation of the school was necessary, as technical services such as electricity and water could not be maintained.
