Fundamental School and Maison Relais

The municipal administration of Hesperange decided to expand the Howald-Couvent school. This school is located near the Maison-Relais and the primary school hosting Cycle 1 (formerly Précoce).

The project includes the construction of a new building with:
• 7 classrooms for the primary school Cycle 1.1 and 1.2
• 7 modules for the Maison-Relais, including a motor skills room that can partially be used as a small sports hall for free play for the school

The primary school and Maison-Relais can accommodate between 140 and 150 children aged 4 to 6 years.

User comfort received particular attention on several levels:
• Hygrothermal comfort (temperature, humidity, ventilation)
• Acoustic comfort (insulation, absorption, external noise isolation)
• Visual comfort (non-glare brightness, light sensors)
• Olfactory comfort (avoiding bad and toxic odors from material emissions such as formaldehyde, etc.)

Howald Primary School is the first school in Luxembourg to benefit from construction using local wood, partly sourced from the nearby forests managed by the Hesperange municipal administration.

An innovative heating system with ice storage was installed. This is a positive-energy building, producing more electricity than it consumes thanks to solar panels installed on the roof.

During the design of the school, building flexibility was anticipated to allow easy transformation at any time. To achieve this, the building structure was designed with large spans to maximize space, and non-load-bearing partitions were used so as not to affect the main structure.
